while i don’t agree with the methods that ted kaczynski used to promote his ideas, i do confess to being a closet luddite. sure, this may sound a bit wacky coming from one who makes his living using computers daily, but i think the more we place our reliance upon technology, we wear away at the fact that we are natural beings. if we separate ourselves from the reality that surrounds us, we place our trust in a system of technological failsafes that routinely fail and are hardly ever safe. what would happen to a city of 50,000+ if electrical power were suddenly wiped out? what if the water supply were irreparably damaged? what if our fossil fuel sources dried up tomorrow? what would happen to people who make their living working for ISPs and the remaining dot.coms if the internet collapsed under the weight of a mega-DOS Attack (this hits too close to home for me.)? our society becomes ever more fragile, as we become ever more “advanced.”
