Donor Maintenance.

An interesting article on the sponsors of the DNC. Favorite line: “Our vote is not for sale,” declared the Rev. Al Sharpton

This being said, I’m sure it pales in comparison with the sponsorships behind the RNC. My point though, is why do we trust either party?

more rasputina.

i don’t know if anyone else would get as big of a kick out of these itty bitty little sound clips, but if you are interested the first one is them doing a cover of “baraccuda” and the other is a song that i believe melora wrote.

Publik School

An interesting read on kuro5hin, which reminded me of John Taylor Gatto and led me to his site, where his book is online, for free.

Long article short, John Taylor Gatto (a thirty-year veteran of the New York school system, and had been honored as both NYC and NY state Teacher of the Year) exposes the failures of public/corporate schooling.

Interesting tidbit:

Abundant data exist to show that by 1840 the incidence of complex literacy in the United States was between 93 and 100 percent, wherever such a thing mattered. Yet compulsory schooling existed nowhere.

Shape Note Singing

I’m glad that I am born to die / From grief and woe my soul shall fly / And I don’t care to stay here long!

Found a good resource for Sacred Harp / Shape Note singing: Fasola.org. I first heard shape note singing on the Cold Mountain Soundtrack, and I’m almost sorry to say that it’s a little addictive. Here’s a good site that has some live recordings.

Oh, and you can buy the Sacred Harp Songbook here.
